Character Name: Caleb Brown

Series: OC

Background: Caleb was born and raised in the tiny, rural town of Thunder Valley, Georgia, smack dab in the middle of nowhere. His father was the pastor of the town's Baptist church and Caleb was his little miracle. From a very young age he exhibited a handy ability that brought his family and their town fortune. He could cure anything with just a touch. Broken bones, the cold, terminal cancer. So Caleb grew up doing God's work. One Sunday a month, after sermon, crowds would gather so he could perform his miracles. People left satisfied, word spread, and his father became the greediest shit you'd ever meet.

Caleb, of course, was oblivious to how exploitative things had become. And everything went to hell when he was fourteen.

The woman had arrived hysterical. He barely knew her, but he'd seen her in town before with her son. Unable to get her to calm down, Caleb journeyed off to her home, only to find her six-year-old dead in the living room. He'd healed a lot of things in his fourteen years. Never once had he tried to bring back the dead. So he gave it a whirl.

It was the worst mistake he ever made. It had worked, but not well. Whatever Caleb had dragged up definitely was not her little boy. Not by a milestone. It died, again, hours later, and he left thoroughly traumatized. The aftermath wasn't pretty. Unable to talk about the experience, the anxiety set in. He realized, painfully, that his father had been abusing his gift and robbing the people he'd healed. His enthusiasm died and he questioned, well, everything. Was it really a gift? Maybe this was divine punishment for his arrogance. His father's sermons were now his personal hell. Two years later Caleb refused to do any more healings.

He and his father fought and eventually stopped talking completely. Thunder Valley became a less than welcoming place to live. Then halfway through his senior year of high school his father suffered a massive heart attack and died.

They'd all known his father was ill. They never talked about it, but Caleb knew. His father never asked for a healing, and Caleb never offered. As angry as he was at his father, the amount of guilt he felt was massive. He couldn't leave fast enough. His mother had made sure he had a nice handy college fund, so Caleb took it and ran. He entered a private university and majored in music but barely made it through his first semester. Feeling isolated and alone, and unable to return to the home that had become hostile, he just kept running.

The next several years weren't great. He lived mostly off his college fund, sleeping in his car, occasionally cheap motels, and on the couches of the men he dated. He found a few odd jobs, but it was hard to stay in one place too long. Eventually his luck turned around and he ended up in the parking lot of Basanti's tea shop. He'd been in the area three days, mostly loitering, and hanging out in the back of her cafe. She noticed pretty fast. Basanti lived alone and had been running the shop on her own since her parent's died, so she gave him an offer. If he worked in her shop without pay and allowed her use of his car, he could live and eat for free in her spare bedroom. He took it up.

They both benefited from the experience. Basanti quickly became his closest friend and confidante. Something about her was soothing to the core. Slowly, very slowly, Caleb worked through the guilt plaguing him for years. Eventually he started healing again, but not in a showy fashion. Meanwhile, Caleb's presence allowed Basanti to continue going to school, something she'd been unable to do without a car or the time. He eventually picked up a side job and when the time was right he moved into an apartment of his own nearby. Things no longer sucked.

Then he met Arthur.

Arthur was the second best person he ever met. They dated nine months and had moved in together after four. He was a paramedic and a reaper hybrid, something that blew Caleb out of the water. (People that shepherded souls of the dead? Oh the irony.) He met Sandrath, Arthur's ex, and was less than thrilled about that. Because Sandrath was a gigantic scary asshole and liked to turn up uninvited. Besides that hiccup, it was the best relationship Caleb had ever been in. Arthur even proposed. That's when things ended.

Caleb had been attacked. A man had showed up in the bar where he worked and knew him by name. Which was disconcerting in and of itself. At first, Dai was friendly, nice, which made his insistence that Caleb leave with him somehow more threatening. When Caleb refused, things turned ugly. The bar had caught fire in the struggle. He was heroically rescued by three people he discovered were also reapers, but not nearly the same as Arthur. He learned three things that night. One: Dai was a demon and it really wanted him. Two: Simone, who he deciphered as the leader of the trio, insisted the only way to keep him safe was to leave immediately and never come back. Three: He'd never see Arthur, or anyone he knew, again.

Scared and desperate, Caleb left everyone behind, afraid to put their lives in danger. Basanti and Arthur were both crushed by his disappearance. He struggled to find ways to forget, but it turned out not to be too hard. The trio moved him constantly. They could appear anywhere they wanted, which made the traveling easy, but it was exhausting. And lonely. He realized right away that none of the reapers knew how to interact with an actual human. One of them couldn't verbally speak at all. But he could keep distracted, praying Dai wouldn't find them.

And in the middle of these travels he found himself suddenly on the Black Tide, even more alone than before.
